Frequently Asked Questions

What is Wavecam?

Wavecam is an aerial camera system for use in coaching and broadcasting. Designed for permanent indoor/outdoor installation, Wavecam captures all of the shots typically used in the broadcast of athletic or entertainment events, as well as dynamic aerial shots.

Who developed Wavecam?

The technology was developed by Edmond Dougherty, Wavecam's co-founder and award winning engineer. Wavecam represents the next-generation of aerial camera technology in terms of functionality, safety, availability, ease of use, unobtrusiveness, and cost.

How is Wavecam controlled?

The Wavecam is controlled by the Operator Flight Control Center. There are two control panels, one for horizontal and lateral positioning and a second panel for control over all camera functions, including pan, tilt, zoom, focus and iris control. The Flight Center uses a combination of joystick, rocker switch, and dial controls, each ergonomically positioned for simultaneous, multi-function adjustment. The Wavecam can be operated by one or two "pilots." A single operator can position and shoot the Wavecam; however, if moving shots and continuous repositioning is needed, a second operator is recommended.

What kind of camera does Wavecam accept?

To achieve the optimal image quality for a specific application, Wavecam includes a customized camera, selected from the best production cameras available. HD and SD cameras, along with lenses from major manufacturers, have been vetted by Wavecam's engineers as providing the optimum combination of image quality and control features. The primary consideration in the vetting process is which cameras will perform consistently in the context of Wavecam's operating parameters. Our engineers can customize suitable cameras so they can be mounted in the Suspended Camera Control System™ and controlled by the Flight Center™. The site plan and production requirements of each customer will be carefully evaluated by both Wavecam engineers and the end user to determine the actual camera selection.

Does Wavecam provide training and service?

While operating the Wavecam is intuitive and the basics are learned in seconds, it is important that all personnel who will pilot the system learn both the safety considerations of operating the camera as well as the many features and how they can be best used to capture stunning images. Wavecam Media provides a complete training regimen for its clients at the time of installation as well as ongoing training on an as-arranged basis.

The Wavecam has gone through exhaustive testing in the field and each unit is pre-tested in our production facility before it is released for installation. As part of the support package, to provide time-sensitive service, support personnel are always available.

Is Wavecam safe?

Throughout the development process the number one goal of our team has been to create a product that is safe for players, fans, and Wavecam operators. The macro-level safety designs as well as the multiple safety features designed into each Wavecam subsystem ensure that the Wavecam can be confidently and safely flown by Wavecam certified operators on an every day basis. With redundant safety features engineered throughout the Wavecam, our team has been exhaustive in addressing safety concerns.
